Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Fifty years ago, civil rights activists put their lives on the line to confront the bigotry, discrimination, and oppression that threatened the founding vision of the United States. Now, our students can learn from their legacy to ensure a more equitable and just future for generations to come.
My students are high schoolers at a college prep high school in Washington DC.
They come from diverse backgrounds and each have their own story. My students are approximately 70% African-American and 30% Latino. Many of them will be the first in their families to attend college. They make connections between what we learn in class and the world around them, so retracing the path of the Civil Rights Movement will not just help them understand facts, but will help them understand their own lives and their legacy of resistance so that they become leaders for equity.
My Project
We are proud to continue our experience, "Tracing the Movement to Draw a Different Future: Civil Rights Tour of the South," for a third year. This empowering and inspiring program will give students the opportunity to research and tour historical sites of the Civil Rights Movement, interview individuals essential to historical and current civil rights struggles, and share their experiences with the broader community. Students will travel through key landmarks of civil rights history in Greensboro, NC; Atlanta, GA; Montgomery, AL; Selma, AL; Jackson, MS; Memphis, TN; and Maysville, KY. They will be able to deepen their own understanding of how our shared racial history affects their past, present, and future. Upon their return, they will take action on injustice that they see in their own community.
Students will return from this trip as empowered agents of change, with tools to interrupt injustice around them.
In addition to helping students learn about the United States' path toward justice, this trip will give students the opportunity to travel outside of Washington DC, visit college campuses, and connect with experts in the field. Their transformational experience depends on your support!
