The second grade students at our school have worked so hard this year to become excellent readers. We love how excited they get to build knowledge and experience while learning new concepts. Watching them immerse themselves in each new story brings joy to our hearts.
The Summer Tournament of Books 2025 will help maintain and grow the rigor and momentum of our second grade student's reading and writing success from this school year while supporting the bridge to third grade.
Students at any grade level can lose up to two months of reading skills over the summer break. It will take over six weeks in the next school year to regain those lost skills. This loss is known as the "Summer Slide." Our summer reading program that our second grade students do each year is designed to put quality books in their hands while inspiring opportunities to read fun and meaningful text over the summer while avoiding the "summer slide." An effective and consistent reading and writing program like the Tournament of Books will help all students in second grade come back from a fun and relaxing summer break ready for the excitement and challenge of third grade.
