My Students

Everything is more fun with friends. We do not have class sets of novels for Literature Circles, and my students will read when they have a partner or group to collaborate with.

My students are boisterous kids from the Philadelphia public school system with a lot of creativity, imagination, and energy.

Reading is not consistent in most of their lives. The past 2 years, I have been introducing various reading activities, and literature circles are the next exciting level!

My Project

I am hoping for a set of 30 paperback copies of "Touching Spirit Bear" for 8th grade literature circles. I already have downloaded other resources. The novel is about a young man who is sent to Alaska to live in the wilderness as an alternative to jail, and he participates in Native American Circle Justice. We read as he learns about the world, himself, and how to become a better person. There are interactive activities for the students, for example they look up their "spirit animal" daily. I believe this novel will connect to my students in a profound way.

The themes in this novel are important themes for middle school students to consider, and I carry an important role in their lives.

I feel a responsibility to discuss these themes with my students, while practicing a plethora of reading strategies!
