How can I prepare my students to be successful in a world full of technology without having new touch screen technology to practice various skills in my classroom? This year I have 21 curious and eager first grade students who have a true love for learning! They attend a Kindergarten through third grade Title I school, and they come from diverse backgrounds. In addition, many students here receive free or reduced lunches, so there's a lack of opportunities to explore learning through touch technology at home.
My students love to learn by doing, so using sight word apps (for example) that include various paint colors for writing them will be extremely engaging for them.
It's including art in technology! Giving my students the opportunity to explore concepts being taught is the best opportunity I can give them, especially if it is by "doing".
My Project
Having these iPads will allow for different centers of learning in my classroom. One way they will be used is as a sight word center. Students can practice writing sight words in color by actually using their fingers or a stylus to write the words and by touching a color of choice. Another way they will be used for is first grade math centers. In my classroom, students need daily reinforcement on skills previously taught as well as current skills. So, these iPads will allow me to download apps where students can interactively learn. Students could write in answers or touch correct answers during math centers for addition, subtraction, time, or graphing. I could download apps for various ELA and Math practice skills for centers, which would allow me to have activities for both my highest performing and most struggling learners!
My project will make such a impact for all of my firsties to learn through interactive technology!
Learning by doing equals life long learning for all of my students that have such diverse backgrounds!
