My Project

My 4th grade class wants to adopt a Russian Tortoise and our project centers around caring for him. Having a pet in the classroom is a huge undertaking for both the teacher and the students, but the rewards are numerous. In the words of one student, "He would teach us to be responsible and care for someone else." Students could also spend time 'chatting' with and reading to the tortoise, with one student saying "He would make me feel less lonely if I don't have a lot of friends."

Furthermore, the students are learning about the habitat and adaptations of the tortoise as part of a science unit focused on animal adaptions.

The Russian Tortoise has 'vulnerable' status in the wild and this will also teach students about the conservation efforts for this reptile. This project will span more than just this school year, as tortoises can live for upwards of 50 years and ours is just a baby.
