This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Comics are a gateway drug to literacy." ~Art Spiegelman, Pulitzer-Prize author. Absolutely! Let's immerse our students with toons so that they find another reason to be passionate about reading.

I have 22 vivacious second grade students who come to school every day eager to learn.

My students have a deep love for reading; give them a genre and they take off searching for it in our school library. Most of the students at our school come from lower socio-economic households. Ninety-seven percent qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my students participate in our after-school support program or child-care due to various family circumstances. Despite these factors, my students are very enthusiastic about school; they come to school ready to take on the day and engage in new learning.

My Project

This comic book genre study will take my students' passion for reading to a whole other level. Although my students won't know it when they first pick up a comic, but they'll soon learn that these toons have the Common Core State Standards embedded into every book. Toon Books' drawings will help captivate my students' reading interest all while they develop many important literacy skills, like visual and verbal literacy. Not only will the Toons Books fuel my students passion for reading, but the set will allow me to do a genre study with my students with the multiple copies of a few texts that come in the set. This will allow us to dig deeper into the stories and examine the author's purpose and the intent for the text features in each comic. Lastly, these books will serve as wonderful mentor texts that will help support my students' writing.

Not only will Toon Books introduce my students to a new reading genre, but it will also elevate their reading comprehension with all the Common Core Standards that are embedded into each fun and engaging story.
