Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

With all of the traumas my students have faced over the course of the last few years and seeing the lasting impact, I am looking to provide a quiet mindfulness space within my school building.

I am a School Social Worker in a NYC intermediate public school and I see daily the need for having a designated calming and inviting space to practice self care skills and promote positive social emotional development through mindfulness practices.

The Mindfulness Mat Kit will not only visually help with developing the space, but the Kit will also provide activities to help foster a sense of well being among my students. One of the main goals of creating this designed space is to help reduce stress and anxiety which are often realities for many adolescents. The Mindful Mats are another set of tools to support a comfortable space to afford students the opportunity to get in touch with their thoughts and feelings through mindfulness practices. The Sensory Worry Stones are yet another tool to give students the ability through the sense of touch to feel soothed, calmed and focused within the mindfulness space. Designing this much needed space will serve as another support for students, in helping them to develop the skills they will need now and, in the future, to become resilient, caring and productive individuals.
