My Students

We are learning firsthand how to be active, how to stay active, and most importantly, how to take an active role in maintaining a healthy level of physical fitness both in and out of class.

My students attend a large public middle school in Northern California.

Our school aims to utilize technology in all aspects of learning, helping students access a wealth of information and introducing them to a wide variety of resources that can help them reach their personal and academic goals. We believe that quality physical education is a vital part of every child’s academic day. We strive to provide age appropriate movement opportunities, and to teach students the importance of a physically active lifestyle. In addition to providing unit instruction designed to elevate the heart rate and enhance motor skill development, we use technology to help students focus on individual performance, improvement, and accountability. Students come away from our program having developed competency in a variety of movement skills, and equipped with the tools and knowledge to maintain a physically active lifestyle.

My Project

Our current cardiovascular training program encourages students to use GPS technology as a tool to obtain live feedback, so they can adjust their performance in an effort to meet their individual fitness goals. Each week, students use GPS watches to monitor their pace and distance during a 10-15 minute run period. Since each student has a different distance goal based on their current fitness level, the watches allow students to focus solely on their own performance, rather than how they are performing compared to their classmates. By simply looking at their wrist, students can retrieve information about their running speed and can adjust their pace based on their progress towards their distance goal. By using this technology, students are learning how to train efficiently and are experiencing higher levels of success because they are focusing on meeting small, attainable goals specific to their individual fitness level and ability.

With growing class sizes, it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide enough GPS watches to accommodate all of our students, especially when we need to replace watches periodically that are no longer usable due to normal wear and tear.

Your donations will make it possible for us to keep offering this program, so that all of our students can continue learning how to use fitness technology as a tool to help them reach their personal fitness goals.
