Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a Title 1 school. Many of my students have come from different countries with limited English speaking skills, but my 4th and 5th grade students are truly enthusiastic about learning! They come to my classroom each day wondering what they are going to learn. This inspires me to engage them using strategies that will encourage their desire to learn and explore the world around them.

They are diverse learners ranging in abilities and ESOL levels, but this doesn't stop them from wanting to learn.

Their differences make my classroom a place where their creativity shines through! I love seeing the "light bulb" moments as they work together, truly helping each other despite the "learning challenges" some of them face. This makes me want to be a "better" teacher!

My Project

Science is an exciting time for my students as they enter my classroom, but without important "tools" to make it relevant, the lesson I want them to learn may get lost along the way. In learning Science, my students need the basics when working in groups and collecting data. They need stopwatches to measure time during our science activities. They need magnets to understand which items magnets "attract" and "repel". Spring scales will help them measure the amount of weight and force of an object. Thermometers will help them understand, not only how to read temperature, but the difference between reading the units of Celsius and Fahrenheit. Other basic "tools" include headphones to assist them with listening to and watching their online Science videos and tutorials that will review Science concepts. Writing utensils, sticky notes and index cards, which seem like simple "tools", but are so important as they make observations and record results in their Science journals. You might ask "what about those stuff animals". These "study buddies" provide incentive and motivation as they take turns to take them home on days off and weekends.

With these "tools of the trade", my "little Scientists" will be learning productively, having what they need at their "fingertips" to engage them and promote their love for Science as they work together.
