My Project

My name is Grace Kochanowicz and this is my second year teaching in the Philadelphia School District. As a new teacher, I have faced many supply challenges that teachers across the world experience when trying to make an engaging space that promotes effective learning. I aspire for my classroom to be a vibrant and safe space, in which students are eager to build their academic and interpersonal skills without barriers.

As an educator who knows the benefits of differential learning, it is imperative that my second graders have access to headphones, wiggle seats for flexible seating and a colored printer.

Without headphones, students experience difficulty when trying to concentrate and complete their assigned online activities. Additionally, Flexible Seating would contribute to an increase in student concentration. This option gives students control of their physical environments in which they work best. This will lead to student engagement which is linked to higher motivation and academic performance. Finally, access to a colored printer would allow my students to benefit from colored visuals. Color in the class will engage my students in daily activities by allowing greater creativity and visual processing, two essential components of childhood development.

Every student in my classroom has unique character strengths and abilities that allow them to express their individuality in a social environment. They all come from different backgrounds which allows our classroom to participate in engaging conversations where the students not only learn from class activities, but also from each other. My students are resilient and positive and I know the donations to our classroom would make a big difference in their academic journeys. I cannot imagine a greater sense of success than that of knowing I am accommodating my students’ learning needs and instilling in them the value of education and social engagement.
