Help me give my students basic classroom supplies to help them be successful! We are in need of paper, printer ink, dry erase markers, erasers and boards.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a Title I school. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My ENL class learns best through hands-on activities and in small groups which they love! The majority of students are from single parent households and receive free breakfast and lunch. Regardless of these challenges, they still come to school eager and ready to learn! Although I may not be able to control their home life, I can definitely control their experience during the day!
Our school is a safe place where students come to learn and are inspired to be lifelong learners.
My Project
The use of dry erase markers and a whiteboard is a daily activity in my classroom. We use the 5 Practices to teach Math in my school and students are constantly working in small groups. Students are encouraged to show mathematical thinking with their group members using dry erase markers and boards. Since we do not have boards, students are writing on their desks which is very difficult to clean. The markers also do not last very long since we use them multiple times a day. If the marker does not work, students know they can leave the group to get a new marker or even a pencil and paper to show thinking. While they are great at doing this, it is a distraction and they are losing instructional time. These new markers, boards and erasers will make learning more engaging for students and will allow them to move around the room with their work to promote more mathematical discourse.
Your donation to our classroom project will make learning more engaging for the students and will allow them to be more successful academically.
Using the 5 Practices for Math involves students working together to complete a Problem of the Day which allows students to work out the problem in their small group before completing a similar problem independently which then leads into our daily lesson and centers. Due to this, we need copies of word problems every day for 60 students. Making copies can sometimes be difficult at my school so the printer ink will allow me to print a few copies for each group of students. The colored paper makes students more engaged in their learning!
