Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a special education teacher, I have the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing students. Most of my students spend time with me outside of their grade level classroom to work on specific skills or gaps in learning in order to help them achieve grade-level expectations. All of my students are bright and talented individuals who just need someone to really "see" them and listen to them. But sometimes, the work we do can be very frustrating and, for some, defeating.

Most of my students are not only working hard to overcome some academic hurdles but they are often also working very hard to adjust to a new environment, learn a new language, and/or may be working to help regulate their emotions while surrounded by many other students who are, at times, striving to overcome some of the same hurdles.

My Project

Sensory tools and fidgets support students when focusing on learning and/or when particularly difficult lessons become more frustrating. Sometimes students need to work for a specified amount of time and then may need some time to take a break from non-preferred tasks and difficult academic tasks by using sensory tools. It's important that all students have access to tools to support their learning both in and out of their grade-level classrooms. Students often need time to self-regulate their emotions when learning gets more difficult and a variety of calming tools will support all students succeed.
