My students are an amazing group of young people that daily inspire me to be a better educator. Our school is an urban middle school and the student population comes from high-poverty neighborhoods. As a school, we have developed a culture that thrives on positive relationships and we have made it our goal to find ways for all students to love school. My students are enthusiastic, expressive and take a lot of pride in being a part of the school's band. They have worked hard to improve as a band and have fallen in love with music in the process.
Their love for band is just ONE of the things that makes them love school!
They are pushed to be the best they could possibly be by all members of the staff.
The theme of this project comes from the idea "perfect practice makes perfect." My classroom needs twelve brand new music stands in order to smooth our transition into sectionals (small group rehearsal time). Sectionals rehearse in adjoining rooms to the main band room and as of right now the students have to carry their music folders, instruments and their music stands to these spaces. Transitions are taking more time than needed and have resulted in incidental damage to equipment. Twelve new music stands would make it possible to designate some music stands to the small group spaces and students would only need to carry their instrument and music folder.
"Perfect practice makes perfect" means that students are practicing excerpts of music correctly the first time and this equipment is essential to perfect practice.
The PA Speaker is another tool to help our band continue to improve. Right now the only speakers we have are a set of computer speakers that can barely fill the room with their sound. The new Bluetooth Speaker would be used to play reference recordings, for listening to recordings of our own band's rehearsing and we would use the speaker to project the clicks of a metronome help with students rehearse their music with a steady beat. The speaker would be loud enough that the entire band could play while the metronome was pumping through the speaker, which is a valuable rehearsal tool.
