My Students

Our morning begins when my first graders walk into the room laughing, talking, and bustling to get ready for another great learning day.

My school is considered an inner-city school.

Most of our students are identified as economically disadvantaged. All of our students participate in the National Free Lunch Program. My class consists of 24 first grade students. They are eager learners and try their best to achieve their dream. As their teacher, I want to give them the tools to enrich their learning experience.

My Project

There are huge benefits to using oil pastels. They are easy to clean, easy to control, and extremely versatile. Their versatility allows for amazing effects that regular crayons cannot produce.

Finding time to teach art is a great challenge when our daily schedule is packed with core subjects.

Therefore, I want to offer my students opportunities to explore and experience different media as much as possible to maximize the learning experience in the given time.

Oil pastels are perfect because they can be used in many different ways. Painting with oil pastels can be done quickly and they don't need dry time. They can be used alone, together with water color, or with oil to show the effects of oil painting.

I cannot stress enough the benefits of painting for children. It can help children communicate their feelings. It can help children develop motor skills as well as visual perception. I also have learned that painting is a great way to encourage the reluctant young artists to try.
