Let's begin by saying that my students are simply amazing! I am an Elementary Reading Specialist and have the privilege of working with students in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade each and every day!
All students who enter my classroom are ready and willing to learn because they feel successful during my small group instruction as we practice skills that meet their individual needs.
I service students who are either dyslexic or reading below their current grade level. Many of my students are from economically disadvantaged families and rely on their academic experiences to learn about life, new cultures, and how to best handle different situations that may come their way. Each day that I work with my students, I strive to expose them to a variety of different reading genres as we work to improve their reading and comprehension skills.
My Project
Myself and my coworker, R. Haemker are working to create new ways for our students to think creatively while completing academic tasks and improving their skills in all academic areas. By using STEAM bins, students will be able to incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math into a variety of projects in the classroom.
By using Comprehension Toolkits, students will have the opportunity to use new manipulatives as they practice analyzing the variety of fiction and nonfiction texts they read in our classrooms.
The STEAM Bins will include materials such as magnetic building blocks, wooden planks, and dominoes will allow students to think divergently, inventively, and imaginatively as they develop models to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem. The Comprehension Toolkits will include materials such as legos, popsicle sticks, magnets, and dominoes as students build and discuss components of text as a group. The toolkit activities appeal to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners because students are provided with a visual, yet concrete way to "build" each piece of text as they comprehend and explain it. The toolkits will aid students in learning new strategies that will help them as they tackle new, more advanced texts. When students have the opportunity to use their creative minds while learning, they are more likely to retain information and enjoy what they are learning which will, ultimately, improve their overall academic skills.
