Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am very excited to be teaching kindergarten as a special education teacher this year in an integrated, co-teaching classroom. My classroom consists of ten students with special needs and fifteen students of mixed English Language Learners and general education students. Students are not only diverse academically, but economically and culturally as well. My students face many challenges everyday, in school and out. My school has a very large population of low poverty, as well as children in shelters.

These past two years has brought many challenges to teachers, students, and their families.

Many students did school through a full remote or a blended learning model. As things begin to return to normal and all students return to in person learning in September, there are new challenges that we will face. One of these challenges is to maintain an environment with healthy clean air.

My Project

This project is to gather tools to help create a classroom calm down corner.

A calm down corner or peace corner, is a designated place where students can go when they are feeling overwhelmed or upset.

The purpose is to create a safe space where students can practice self-regulation skills and work to calm themselves.

Students will use the sensory tools to help soothe themselves. The goal is for students to be able to learn to use the tools and space to regulate their emotions and reset before reentering the learning spaces.
