My Students

"Where words fail, music speaks." ~ Hans Christian Anderson. Information today is communicated through sound bytes and YouTube videos. I want my students to have instruments and technology to record and produce music. Their recordings may stand alone or accompany videos they create.

Our school prides itself on its commitment to the arts and sciences, areas that are neglected in many public schools.

We also pride ourselves on taking an innovative approach to teaching and learning in a diverse and quickly changing world. Our students come from diverse backgrounds in terms of ethnicity and socioeconomic status; 80% of our student population receives free or reduced cost lunch. Despite the wide variety of students, they all have one thing in common: they all benefit from using music and technology to express their creativity.

My Project

Middle and high school students will use the piano keyboards to compose music, and the computer cables will allow them to record their music from the keyboard directly into audio engineering software. We already have good quality microphones we can use to capture voices and acoustic instruments; the microphone stands, wind screen filters, and TRS to XLR cables requested will allow us to input the microphones into the software. Students already have experience with percussion instruments. The additional instruments requested (xylophone chromatic add-on, glockenspiel, tambourines and guiros) will further enhance the palettes of timbres they have to choose from when performing and composing music. Lastly, my students need music stands to make it easier for them to perform their music. Ultimately, students will publish their compositions, either as stand-alone works or in conjunction with films or videos they are producing.

This project enables students to increase their computer literacy while learning about musical composition and production.

This technology is relevant to my students who thrive when they are able to be creative. Students will also benefit from having more instruments to choose from, further enriching their musical experience. Some students may continue on to careers in music performance or production. Others will simply benefit from the technological savvy they gain from these engaging tools.
