Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is nestled in the heart of the city's deep south and is composed of about 96% economically disadvantaged children. As an educator, my top priority is to close the instructional gap. I do this by differentiating instruction as the "one size fits all" model does not work with students living in poverty especially those that also suffer from learning disabilities. The stress that these students face at home doesn't allow them to focus in an educational setting, but my students still make a great effort to do so. One of the greatest challenges that students in poverty face is the lack of resources and supplies.

My students understand that working hard and being disciplined is what is needed to be successful in life.

My students have an insatiable hunger for knowledge. They enjoy reading and get satisfaction from opening the doors to their imagination. Mathematics, Science and History also allow them to gain knowledge of the outside world and prepare them for the future. They are always so eager to learn. Little do they know that they teach me the best lessons in life!

My Project

Most if not all of my students are economically disadvantaged. They lack knowledge of the outside world and have no resources to purchase supplies that we use in class daily. Simple things like the requested crayons, glue, scissors, colored paper and pencils bring a smile to their face. All these supplies are used to create interactive notebooks for Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies. Interactive notebooks can help students process information, study and review for assessments and personalize the content being presented. They also allow for teacher differentiation to reach a range of student's abilities and learning styles.

The books I am requesting can take my students into a unique world of imagination.

They enrich the experiences of students and sharpen their intellect. Let's not forget that books are fun. They allow my children to escape from the everyday stress they have at home and give them peace of mind and pleasure.
