This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a school social worker, I support all students in grades K4-5th grade at my school in Milwaukee. My school is located in an urban district where the majority of students come from low-income households. My students, in particular, come from very diverse backgrounds - there are over 10 languages spoken by families at my school! The diversity at my school is a beautiful strength, and it creates a unique opportunity for students to appreciate each others' differences and similarities. Many of my students face challenges inside and outside of the classroom, but despite these challenges, my students come to school with an excitement for learning.

My students are resilient, curious, funny, kind, and the future leaders of our community.

They enjoy learning and engaging in hands-on activities that have real-life applications. My role provides me with the opportunity to teach and practice social-emotional skills, team-building, conflict resolution, and coping skills. My goal is to work with students individually, in small groups, and in large groups to foster a healthy and positive school community where every student feels like they belong.

My Project

In my work as a school social worker, it is my responsibility to counsel students who may be experiencing difficulties at school with peer relationships, teacher relationships, and learning in the classroom. I've learned that my students respond best to learning social-emotional skills by teaching with "kid-friendly" language and stories with which they can identify.

These materials will provide me with resources for counseling my students with stories and characters that they can relate to, which will allow them to reflect on and grow their own critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

These books, materials, and activities will be utilized with individuals and small groups of students to develop and strengthen their social-emotional skills. Providing students with engaging activities and materials to develop their social-emotional skills is crucial to helping them reach their potential both inside and outside of the classroom.
