My Students

Our students are fun, full-of-life, and never cease to amaze me. So many of them are eager to learn as well as teach others.

Our kids love to help!

Whether it be passing out papers, carrying boxes, or making sure the chairs are pushed in, they volunteer to help.

While they do enjoy helping others, they could use a little help of their own. For some of our families, the choice between gas for the car, food for dinner, or paying the bills, is one that has to be made.

We are in a low-income, high poverty school district. We have over 400 4th and 5th grade students in our school. 63% of those students receive free lunches and 40 of those students receive Backpack Buddies (food to take home for the weekend).

My Project

Every single pair of shoes will go to our students when they cannot afford shoes of their own. Several of our students' shoes suffer from what I like to call 'talking shoe' (when the sole flops free of the rest of the shoe), 'peek-a-boo toes' (when there are holes in the front or the sides of the shoe), or 'giant shoe' (when kids who wear size 5 come to school in their adult's size 11 shoes and just tie them really tight to keep them on). Our kids are inventive and resourceful. One student had his shoes held together with a binder clip.

I've seen duct tape, string, staples, and bread ties, but the binder clip was a first for me.

Unfortunately, because so many students need shoes at our school, our supply is out again. I don't want to have to send students back to class in a binder clip pair of shoes. Help us give 12 students shoes that fit, that will last and that they can be proud of.
