I am a regular education teacher in a third grade inclusive classroom. An inclusive classroom addresses the needs of diverse learners. Although it is a third grade classroom, my students reading abilities range from a beginning first grade level to a beginning fourth grade level. The obstacle that I am facing is the lack of having a classroom library. My students only have one opportunity to visit the media center every two weeks. My students showed an interest in animals so I'd like to have them research Rain Forest animals and their habitats. Once the research is completed, the students will teach their peers about their animal using drawings. Another skill the children need to be experienced with is Author's Purpose. The students have to explain why authors write books. The students will have to complete an author's study on one author. Using a poster board, students will share and write about their author. Students will be able to rotate around the room and learn about these authors. Eventually, my students will write their own books and illustrate them. We will take a few days and share each of their books. These are just a few of the many things I'd like my students to experience with a classroom library. Some of the resources we'd need are books about the Rain Forest, animals, and books by the same author. Using a classroom library will give the students experience with researching for information about a specific topic. They will become experts about animals in the Rain Forest and their habitats. They will also get the experience with oral presentations. Understanding an author's purpose for writing is difficult for young readers to comprehend. The exposure to several books by the same author will give these young readers a better grasp as to why they write. Some authors write to entertain, give information, or to explain things. Students are tested on this skill throughout the year and right now its one of their weaknesses. I'm hoping that by the end of the year, this skill will be a strength for my students. You will make it possible for my students to read about favorite animals, explore the world, conduct experiments, find a favorite author, and enjoy the simple pleasures of Reading! Reading is a skill that requires a great deal of practice. To practice you needs books!
