Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students don't get to see the world. They don't get to travel. Their commute via train is all the exposure to the great big world that they receive. As most of the students are at or below poverty level, they need assistance when it comes to being exposed to the world.

They are really good teenagers at heart, but at times they have trouble seeing how what they say and do affects the lives of others.

We just completed a Holocaust unit during which an ample amount of students discovered what the Holocaust was, having never heard of it before. That's right, they had never heard of it before, and they are teenagers.

My Project

Having class discussions centered around differences and understanding are conversations that typically do not happen. However, through reading The Laramie Project, the students will discuss what it means to accept others for who they are and come up with creative ways to spread their message to others. My students will be exposed to seeing what tolerance, and intolerance, look like in the real world through reading The Laramie Project and The Laramie Project Ten Years Later. They will be able to interact with the text as they annotate, in order to really dig in for a deeper understanding of how a person's actions and attitudes have an impact on society. Ultimately, I see this as more than an English book. I see it as a way to create a beautiful and amazing culture of acceptance.

Your donation will help improve the classroom, yes, but more importantly it will help improve the lives of the students as well as the lives of those around my students.

Through the donation of these books, the students will help spread tolerance through literature.
