Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

When my kiddos walk through the door they don't know if they are going to be swinging on a rope swing over shark infested water, leaping across a bridge over hungry alligators, rescuing classmates from a fiery volcanic island using a scooter, poly spot, and a rope, having an indoor snowball battle, or practicing their slam dunks and boxing out skills with an enormous "Monster Hoop."

No matter what they may face in life or inside the gym they do so with tenacity, enthusiasm, perseverance, a can - do attitude, and (usually)the biggest most infectious smiles and belly laughs you have ever seen heard.

Rhythmic drumming reduces stress, boosts the immune system, promotes brain health and function, and is a LOT OF FUN!

If for some reason one of my students is feeling upset about something and is sitting out of an activity or visibly struggling it never fails; one or more of their classmates extends a hand, a kind word or simply rolls them a ball to come & join the game. It never fails. They truly exemplify the word OHANA. Seeing them in action is is truly inspiring. I would compare watching sunrise or sunset..words cannot describe it.

My Project

If you are having a bad day, are stressed, or life is getting you down I have the recipe for you to turn that frown upside down; simply come on in to the gym at our school!

The music is pumping, everyone is jumping, and the energy we are exuding is CONTAGIOUS!!

The heart & soul that they put into any activity they are involved with is off the charts!

What better way to enhance their fitness levels, embrace their love of music, support them with their social emotional learning, and to challenge them cognitively than to add rhythmic drumming to our curriculum!

Rhythmic drumming is an excellent way for children to learn self-awareness, listening skills, coordination of breath and movement, cooperation and patience. It is also a valuable channel for intense emotions and teaches containment of strong feelings and impulses that would otherwise become disruptive and destructive. For example many of our children have low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, defiant behavior, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder or simply an abundance of energy. Rhythmic drumming can be a valuable aid to learning and growth.

Rhythmic drumming is also a wonderfully successful approach to working with kids who have trouble focusing and connecting with others in a satisfying way. Often, these kids have had so much failure in their lives that they come to identify themselves as being "less than." The personal power awakened by drumming helps to rebuild a sense of efficacy and self worth. The repetitive rhythm has a physiologically calming effect. It also builds valuable skills for processing and communicating information, and containing or channeling intense emotions and impulses.

The benefits of rhythmic drumming are abundant! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping us in our rhythmic drumming quest!
