My Project

I am working as a special education teacher for 6th to 8th graders in low-income areas. Their families' limited social and financial conditions have impacted their access to resources, educational support, and overall learning experiences. As their teacher, my primary concern for them is how I motivate these young learners to enjoy and engage in their reading and writing activities. My students' literacy skills are very low and that's why they do not like books. Through observing them, however, I have found that they are never exhausted or bored with drawing!

Reversely, how about helping them create their own booklets with their amazing drawings?

Their drawings are not only pencil-sketching but also expressing their emotions, thoughts, dreams and even pains. While they are drawing on paper with a pencil or color pencils, their negative vibes like frustration, sadness, and anger seem to be leaving their mind and body. Then I can vividly see smiling looks spread out on their faces. What a beautiful transition by a small scratch!

My students' drawings absolutely mean their precious stories happening in their daily lives. However, their drawings and stories cannot be kept for a long-term recollection or portfolio. If their daily or weekly artworks can be saved through a SCANNER into a computer folder for the whole semester and then printed out by a COLOR PRINTER, my students must be proud of their potentials and outcomes. In addition, their particular interest in drawing can have role of motivating them to write a story in a word, a sentence, or a paragraph related to their drawings. At the initial stage, they might add a word or a simple sentence to their images. But who knows that through these routines they can dream of becoming illustrators, authors, or cartoonists?
