Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Take a moment to think about your kindergarten experience. Did you just get a feeling of nostalgia, too? Kindergarten was an amazing and fun time that taught you the foundations of reading, writing, and math. My students are getting that same experience, but they are in dire need of literacy station materials that will help them learn through hands on discovery.

The children I teach are energetic, wonderful, hardworking students.

They impress me everyday with their awesome attitudes because many of them face challenges in their lives that many of us have not experienced. We are a full day kindergarten class at a Title 1 school. Our school is located in a high poverty urban area. All of our students qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. The student population is 85% Hispanic, 7% African American, 3% Caucasian, and 2% Asian.

My Project

At this time in a child's life, a child loves to play games and use hands-on materials; a child doesn't even realize that they are expanding their array of knowledge. The new station materials we are requesting will allow the Kindergarten students to apply and practice their math, writing, and reading skills daily in math and literacy stations. The Kindle Fire tablets that our class is graciously asking for will be used in many ways. Our class is currently learning about the importance of technology. We recently purchased multiple sets of QR Codes, and we want to explore the codes. Unfortunately we are not able to do so because our class does not own a tablet. Having a set of 3 tablets would allow our classroom to explore different applications, and feel confident with technology.

I selected many of these math and literacy materials because they reinforce the skills that we learn everyday.

My students will be able to apply what they have learned using the materials, and they'll practice daily in a fun and stress-free environment. The students will practice a wide range of skills from decoding words all the way to counting to cardinality.

This project will support the students, and place high cognitive demand on each child, as well as set them up for academic success as they transition to First Grade next year. Thank you so much for considering donating to my classroom and my kindergartners. Thank you for believing in us!
