Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"With languages, you can be at home anywhere." In my classroom of multilingual learners from countries all around the world, we strive to make our classroom community feel like home. Our school is known as The Flushing International High School. Here, I, Ms. Angela, teach English Language Arts and English as a Second Language to my 9th and 10th grade students.

We strive to provide each student with equitable access to academic and socio-emotional resources so that they can achieve their goals.

I believe that while each student learns to read, write and communicate clearly in English, their native languages, different cultures, and previous experiences make our learning environment all the more unique. My students are special because they learn to use their minds and creativity to explore real-world issues. They are the next generation of leaders who think critically and advocate for themselves and their communities to make a better world.

My Project

The library books I am requesting for my students already have a "home..." a dusted, wooden bookshelf sitting patiently in the corner of our classroom. Next to our bookshelf, or library-to-be, is a cozy ottoman cushion, where students can nestle into the pages of what they are reading. If they lift their heads, they can peer out the window and see New York City bustling. I imagine my students wrapped up so tightly in their book that they cannot even believe they are reading! This book brings them so much enjoyment and they find themselves in a world of their own. Most importantly, they see themselves in the books they choose. They are inspired by the bravery of the characters that represent them.
