My Students

“There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.” ― Frank Serafini My goal is to ensure every one of my scholars discovers "that" book; the novel that hooks them, reels them in, and sparks in them a lifelong love for reading.

This year, my 6th grade scholars present a challenge in that they range from extremely astute, avid readers with skills well-above grade level to students who truly claim to "hate" books and struggle to comprehend texts written for second or third grade students.

Rising to this challenge, our school has chosen to celebrate literacy and focus on unleashing an excitement and buzz around the joys of reading! My students are drawn to fantasy, realistic fiction, and mystery novels. Favorites include books from the Percy Jackson series as well as Diary of a Wimpy Kid and reads in the historical fiction genre, especially those from the "I Survived" series! My ability to inspire and motivate my students to read is contingent upon my ability to provide them with a diverse classroom library filled with high interest books that range in lexile levels, genres, and topics.

My Project

Scholars have access to my classroom library on a daily basis and have taken ownership of our library book check-out system. Students enjoy this autonomy and enjoy browsing our library, but as a new school, our book shelves are sparse. Students will no longer have to argue over the "popular" books or settle for a book they don't want to read. My scholars need motivation to read and these books will do just that.

If funded, this project will provide my students with the motivation and inspiration they need to become lifelong readers!

These books will fill the shelves of my library with high interest novels that range in lexile (reading) levels - ensuring every student, regardless of their current reading skills, can choose books they enjoy. To that end, students desire to read will motivate them to work towards the next reading level - all along, fostering within them, a love for reading!
