My Students

With the implementation of the Common Core Standards, I find myself at a loss. The standards call for challenging nonfiction texts, but two problems meet me along the way: relevance to the kids, and our ever-lessening budget.

My students need to be challenged.

I acknowledge that. But finding these informational passages are proving to be difficult for me. I either find a piece that is too hard for their 9th grade minds, or passages that they can't relate to. After perusing this book at a bookstore, I became excited at the possibilities it allowed for my students.

My Project

This book offers so much more than just challenging nonfiction articles for my kids to read. It gives them a guide in the margins on how to decode the text. It allows students practice with understanding vocabulary in context. And, it also gives them thought provoking essay questions to extend their learning. I believe this book will be an invaluable help for both my students and myself.

Skills needed when they go out into the world, whether it's reading a newspaper, a college textbook, or even a manual. What they need now is practice, and this book will help.
