My students need BOOKS! I teach English as a second language at the primary level and am seeing an increasing number of students who speak no English. They still deserve to read a good book!

My Students
I teach a beautiful, lively bunch of English language learners that are at every level of English language acquisition. Many of them have faced so much transition in their young lives and yet they come to ESOL class every day with a smile for me.
Our purpose is clear; to give them every opportunity to gain the skills to be successful in the 21st century world.
Our school is a Title I school and we just got a program for autism. The children bring a wide rage of needs both academically and personally.
My Project
I have a growing number of students who speak no English. I have a room full of books that they cannot yet access. I can't even imagine the absolute loneliness they must sometimes feel, not to mention longing for home and the familiar.
I cannot give them those things but I can, perhaps, offer them other worlds on which they might base some portion of the one they build here with me.
I would like to start a Spanish Library in my classroom. The chosen books are so far largely academic but I did find a few that I have enjoyed in English that I would love to share with them.
Not only would l like to offer them something to read for pleasure but their minds should keep working on their academic level even as they begin to acquire their new language.
