My Students

My students are three to five year old Head Start students in the Duquesne area. They come from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures. For many, this is their first time in school, but some are returning students who are glad to help the younger students learn what we do in school.

Play is a common language.

Some of my students speak English, some speak Arabic, but they all love to play. And when children play together they are always learning something new.

My Project

This market stall and working cash register will open up new possibilities for my students' dramatic play experiences. With the play money they can work on numeral recognition and learn the names of the coins. And with the register they can start to explore numbers in relation to addition and subtraction.

The food is there, the interest in money is there, all they need now is the store and the money!

Every day I hear students picking up small round pieces at the light table and talking about how it's "money" or setting themselves up as the "ice cream man" in the window on the playground. With these materials we will be able to explore the concept of exchanging goods for money in a more concrete way.
