To Integrate Technology and Modern-day Concepts Into the Counseling Curriculum

Help me give my students technology in the counseling curriculum-- a more interactive, up to date, approach that assists students with their mental health.

My Project

My goal is to successfully implement the use of an iPad, applicable apps, and readily available internet to improve the success and efficiency of the counseling process. I would like to create a more interactive, up to date, approach that assists in students success. As counselors, we should be assisting students with their academic, career, and personal/social development. Technology offers many supplemental tools, most of which are underutilized, that can assist with this process. The use of the iPad, apps, and tools will be implemented immediately and used daily in our Calm Room. Technology is the language of the current youth and should be used more readily in the counseling office to better reach students on a level that is familiar to them. The apps I will download include:

Emotionary: to help students identify emotions

Social Skill Builder: Uses RTI and PBIS along with a structured intervention program to assist with social skills

BreathRelax: Portable stress management tool for anxious students

MindShift: Targeted to help adolescents, teens, and young adults gain insight into and basic skills to manage their anxiety symptoms

GoalsOnTrack: setting goals, taking action, visualizing, tracking time, building success habits, journaling, reviewing, and restarting the process.

Powerschool: academic success--tracking grades, assignments, progress

O*NET Interest Profiler and Xello: Helps students determine interests for career goals

iPad use will be documented in terms of counselor competencies. I will collect data daily and evaluate it at the end of each semester to determine which applications are the most helpful and useful in terms of student success and well-being. I will further be able to evaluate how to successfully utilize and implement technology in school counseling.

I utilize many hands-on approaches to counseling. This may include hand held fidgeting devices, sensory stickers, music, worksheets, instructional use of websites and other various methods.
