Help me give my students water rocket launchers, pumps, detachable fins, clinometers, and calculators so that they can not only learn about launching rockets into the air, but also to calculate how high they went!

My Students

The world has been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the massive toll that it has taken on our society, and especially our children, has been unsettling. Even though our school doors are still closed, it seems like we are on the road to getting back and seeing everyone in person. My students are a very diverse group that comes from a wide socioeconomic and ethnically diversified background from Los Angeles's Westside. I teach everything from highly accelerated students to students with special needs.

But all students deserve meaningful opportunities for hands-on learning.

All good teaching requires using multiple strategies, resources, and tools so that all learners can access the curriculum. For many of my students, Science is their favorite class because it’s actually "hands-on." They are bright and eager to learn, and recently I even had a student tell me she wanted to be an astrophysicist. Imagine how excited she would be to do a lab where we launch rockets!

My Project

Inspired by the IF/Then project, "Actually, It's Rocket Science," and Elon Musk's SpaceX rocket program of landing reusable rockets, we aim to launch water rockets into the infinity and beyond! The If/Then Curiosity Camp's Pom Pom launcher is a great template to start with, but then we'll take it up a notch for my middle schoolers. Instead of pom poms, we will make and decorate water bottle rockets and launch them into the air by pressurizing the water with a bicycle pump, then use instruments to measure their acquired altitude, and lastly calculate out how high they launched into the air. With a good pump, we might get these rockets over a hundred feet! This Next Generation Science Standards lab would work for the cross-cutting concepts of both force/space standards with concentration of the engineering and mathematics SEP's.

Launching rockets have been captivating kids for generations and this hands-on lab will put them in the pilot's seat.

In the process, they will use the scientific process and the inquiry-based learning to connect what they observe to concepts like Newton's Three Laws of Motion. To support what we'd be learning, we would be adding in the IF/Then Collection video resources, Mission Unstoppable: Behind the Scenes with Rocket Scientists and, Mission Unstoppable: Precipitation, as an introduction of our fuel "source", then add how that water can be pressurized and used to lift rockets off the ground.
