My Students

“The child can only develop fully by means of experience in his environment. We call such experience ‘work’.” ~Maria My students develop who they are meant to be through the work they choose and explore. My biggest challenge is having class materials to keep their inquisitive minds satisfied.

As a Montessori classroom, no one is studying the same thing at one time.

We have a mixed age group (6-9 years) with extreme levels of ability. My students are inquisitive with a large range of interests. My children love story telling, which is integrated into all areas of curriculum to spark interest. They enjoy searching for answers to their questions, and have a glow about them when sharing their discoveries other class members. Areas of our study include: astronomy, physical science, botany, zoology, anatomy, and chemistry. Other curriculum areas are housed in neighboring Montessori classrooms. Shelves contain lessons based on observation's of the children's needs and interests. Students have the freedom of choice (within limits) to work on lessons that inspire and fulfill their needs. Our school is a low-income school with 80% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. It is unique in the fact it is a K3-8th grade school. Our school has a wonderful morale that puts students' needs first.

My Project

Montessori's First Great Lesson is a story told to my students to incise their imagination, interests, and overall knowledge of the beginning of the universe and life on earth. This story expands into studies of astronomy, botany, and zoology. The non-fiction texts will provide accurate information to help students research planets. The inflatable solar system will be used to help calculate the distance between planets, and scale the distance to get an idea just how far this distance is. The beautiful globe will help children understand seasons in both the southern and northern hemispheres. The globe will also be used for our geography and geology curriculum during our continent studies. We can use the globe to understand moon phases (using a flashlight and a small sphere representing the moon). Using the erosion kit, the students can explore how the earth's crust has changed over time. These materials will be respected and put to unimaginable use.

Using the materials donated, my students will be able to explore and learn about the universe they are apart of.

My students can have the opportunity to process thoughts and ideas that will help them become future innovators. By exploring the terrains and fields of earth, they could find their calling of a geologist, astronomer, astronaut, engineer, theorist, science fiction author, or educator. With a universe of unfathomable size, I like to think my students opportunities are equally as large.
