Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine twenty-five 2nd grade students joyously singing to celebrate the start of a new day. I get to begin each morning to the sound of their voices and they bring this energy with them throughout the course of the day as they learn to become proficient in both Spanish and English through our dual language program. We are an Expeditionary Learning school that leads students through the inquiry process to become experts in their studies!

I teach 2nd grade at a progressive, dual language school in Washington Heights, New York.

Washington Heights is primarily a Dominican neighborhood where many of my students are immigrants and speak Spanish at home. I have an integrated classroom, meaning that twenty-five to forty percent of my students have special needs. Despite the various needs of my students, each child is supported to take ownership of their learning and achieve their goals. I believe that it is my job to empower young learners to become change-makers who advocate for themselves and others. My students are incredibly curious and eager to learn!

My Project

Last year we sent almost all of our math manipulatives home to help students with remote learning. We start the school year with these math objects to help students represent addition and subtraction with concrete objects before they move on to more abstract representations.

This year we need to replenish our stock of math supplies to support students to show their mathematical thinking!

My students absolutely love math. These base ten blocks can be used in games and problem solving. Each student will receive their own set of base ten blocks to help them solve tricky math problems. Thank you for supporting my students' math development!
