My Students

Our school is an urban high school in Los Angeles serving 1,300 students through our comprehensive program and our VAPA and STEM-Multimedia Magnets. A Title I school, almost 75% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and have diverse talents and learning styles. About 70% of our students are classified as Long Term English language learners, thus many struggle to keep up with today's complex literacy demands. Additionally, we serve about 100 students with Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) and about 100 students classified as Gifted And Talented (GATE).

While students are increasingly bombarded with multimedia, when it comes to independent reading students still prefer books.

Our book club brings together the most avid readers through generations of students. Students select books and through generous donors, we provide students with their own copies to build their personal libraries. It is through creating this sense of engagement and value in books and reading that we create life long readers.

After a robust discussion of The Cruel Prince, the students want to read the rest of the series. We need 6 copies each of The Wicked King and The Queen of Nothing.

My Project

Book club membership is voluntary and brings together students who love reading. However, it is essential they all have access to the chosen titles in order to be able to read and discuss the book in a timely manner. Having copies for students to keep fosters personal connections to books and a stronger ownership of reading and literacy. Students in book club are proud of the little libraries they build and feel supported in becoming life-long readers because of these little gifts and the community they build as a club. Moreover, as students work together to choose titles and lead discussions, book club allows student, many who may feel drowned out in classrooms, to develop leadership and discussion skills to prepare them for college classrooms and the workplace.
