Teaching here is like teaching at the United Nations - my schools serves students from all over the world! We have so many cultures and languages represented and every day is a chance to not only learn science, but also to learn about each other. We are fortunate to live in an incredibly inclusive environment where diversity is simply a part of every day. This school functions more like a family than anyplace I've ever worked before.
While we are rich in diversity, our community is low in income.
STEM education isn't cheap, and I am always looking for creative ways to support giving my students access to the latest technology. They ask such AMAZING questions - it's up to me to help them figure out how to answer them!
My Project
In my Introduction to Science Research class students generate their own questions and design research projects to answer those questions. It's a class that goes in all sorts of directions all at the same time, limited only by the creativity of the students and my ability to secure materials for them.
"Feeding the World" is the emphasis for several groups this year, with experiments around hydroponics, and plant cloning and grafting.
My students hope to explore a variety of plant cultivars, as well as strategies for increasing yields in production.
The supplies I've asked for will allow my students to begin exploring the concepts of basic plant tissue culture and cloning in preparation for using these techniques in other species. They include one Ken-A-Vision Digital Microscope, one African-violet Tissue Culture Demonstration Kit, and African Violet Plant Tissue Cultures.
