My Students

Think back on your own kindergarten experience. Did you love coming to school, listening to stories, playing at recess or building with blocks? The magic of kindergarten is not only gaining the skills required to be a 21st-century learner but supporting our youngest learners with developing the executive functioning skills children need to thrive. The guided inquiry and magic of play will create lifelong learners who can collaborate and take risks. Research shows students who experience a quality early childhood education have stronger problem-solving skills, and the social-emotional skills needed to succeed in today’s job market. When children are nurtured as well as taught to read, write, and think critically, their growth can be endless. I love teaching kindergarten at a public elementary school in Los Angeles.

Our students come from a low socioeconomic background; all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and the majority of the students are English language learners.

However, statistics don’t tell the whole story. My students are inquisitive, hard-working, and caring. They will count, read, write, but most important, become kind humans ready to make this world a better place!

My Project

"Life must be lived as play." -Plato We have a stove and a sink but are missing a place to store our pretend food and a highchair to feed our baby dolls in our classroom Dramatic Play area.

Playing in transitional kindergarten is the vehicle for our learning.

The dramatic play area in our classroom is a very popular place. Today while watching my students enjoy exploring the space, one child said to his classmate, "Stop putting the food under the sink. That is gross." I giggled and thought, we need a pretend refrigerator. I also witnessed a baby doll fall off the table because a young learner was learning to hold the doll and feed her. Luckily a friend showed her how to hold the baby while feeding it. A doll highchair would be a welcomed addition to our dramatic play area.

I questioned another young learner today, "Why was she was putting pretend food in the suitcase?" She replied, "Because we did not have any shopping baskets." My students know what they need and want to play with in our classroom, please help me provide new materials to facilitate their learning journey.
