Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We will use these items daily! Our school is VERY old and needs lots of renovations. It is a Title I school on the east side of Austin, Texas. It’s in a dangerous area where most residents live in poverty. We only have 3 janitors for a very large campus of prek through 6th grade students. As you can imagine, it is challenging keeping it clean. Especially my classroom!

My students are the sweetest!

They help clean and organize our classroom daily. Every single school day, they use our class Swiffer dry/wet jet for the floor, along with a dustpan and broom for the larger items. My students clean the tables at the end of the day with Clorox wipes.

We have a large rug that is used a lot! It’s dirty and old. We have our own bathroom, which is nice, but it needs frequent cleaning. So does our sink area.

Teaching in a Title I school definitely has its challenges. I want my classroom to be a home away from home, a clean/sanitized, inviting, organized, safe space filled with love. My students DESERVE this.

I buy or have bought EVERYTHING in my classroom including cleaning supplies, furniture, decoration, educational posters/bulletin boards, stuffed animals, prize box items, Kleenex, lamps, plants, manipulatives, games, folders, journals, school supplies, snacks, tape, pens/pencils, a stapler, and I could go on and on.

It’s SAD but so REWARDING! I’d rather teach here than in the overprivileged areas of Austin. I’m a divorced single mom trying to survive off a teacher salary which is not easy! However, I go to bed each night knowing I’ve helped and made a positive difference in these kids' lives. They deserve so much more in life. They are so underprivileged yet so resilient.
