Tip the Balance for Science

My students need a pair of new digital scales for their science classes that have the sensitivity to distinguish between objects that vary by less than a gram.

My Students

Looks can be deceiving and no one knows that better than a scientist. Hefty looking objects can weigh more than flimsy looking ones. Two sea shells can be the same length and have different weights. Differences can be quantitated. This is what I would like my students to learn.

My students are a mixed group of first, second, third and fourth graders.

They attend a K-4 elementary school in a small town and they love science. My class involves learning about science through doing science. I try to have my students manipulate, measure and weigh everything they touch. The students show an amazing enthusiasm over the smallest things. Just recently they were amazed that a plastic die could weigh more than a wooden block.

My Project

I am trying to have my students grasp certain very basic scientific concepts. First, I would like them to learn that all matter weighs something, even air! We fill balloons and weigh them before and after. This helps them compare the weight of air to that of solids and liquids. They get to see that air does indeed weigh something even if it is less than a gram. The scales I would like to obtain for my classroom record weights in less than a gram and that provides this very important experience for them. When my students finish this exercise, they really know that even though air is invisible and very movable; it is still matter and weighs something and takes up space. Secondly, I would like them to realize that two things that look very alike can have different weights. My fourth graders have even found differences in standard weights.

This project is important because it provides equipment that can be used by almost all of my students.

Doing science opens so many more doors than just reading about science. Using these scales to investigate basic science concepts also provides exercise with decimals in math. Students as young as second graders find out that they can be comfortable and manipulate values that are less than one.
