Wasn't music class one of the best things in school? We sang, explored new sounds and rhythms, and had lots of fun. I want to make sure my preschoolers with special needs have that same opportunity. Music is a universal language that even my non-verbal students can understand and enjoy.
My special needs preschool students have been identified as having developmental delays or autism.
They attend a public elementary school and range in age from 2-6 years old. My students are so eager to learn and are excited about coming to school. I want to continue building on their enthusiasm for learning! Our Title One school is located in a high-poverty area, and 77.6% of our students are identified as economically disadvantaged. Our school is also designated as a math, science, and technology magnet within our city.
My pre-k students with special needs are in love with music. They recently received some new instruments through Donorschoose, and music has become our new favorite experience. They have been particularly excited about our drums, and I want to be able to offer more variety in our collection as they tap away. My students really come alive and animated when we bring out the instruments. These instruments include colorfully painted "rainforest" drums such as: hand drums, baby drums, floor drums, a conga, and a festival djembe, plus a collection of colorful, eye-catching mallets for beating the drums. There will certainly be something in this assortment that will be just perfect for each child in my class to meet their needs and abilities!
These simple rhythm instruments will help stimulate and appeal to my student's senses.
All of my students have cognitive delays and other disabilities; they will greatly benefit from having access to a variety of instruments to explore, enjoy, and expand their opportunities. Everyone will be able to dance to their own beat and enjoy the language we all understand: music.
