Our Preschool Center's mascot is a Tiny Titan. The titan mascot was chosen because it symbolizes who are students really are. Our preschool students may be small in stature but they're powerful little people, with big hearts and minds. Most of all, they are resilient. Our preschool students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Most of our students fall 100-200% below the poverty line. They start school with a 30-million word gap, which demonstrates that our students hear far less spoken language before their first day of school than their affluent peers, setting in motion dramatic differences in vocabulary attainment and academic achievement. At age 4, many of our students are struggling with adverse childhood experiences, which has caused trauma. Our teachers must follow trauma- informed care practices to meet their needs. In spite of the adversities, our students are resilient, and our teachers are committed. A combination of a winning team!
My Project
Our school was built without a library for students to browse books and have storytime. Our teachers have books and storytime in their classrooms. This book wall would offer teachers space to have storytime outside of their classrooms, in another area of the building. We could also invite guest librarians to read to students in this area. The carpet squares would allow each student to have a special seat. The teacher would sit on the cube while reading or instructing. Because we have limited space in our building, the seating materials can be easily picked up, avoiding taking up needed space.
