Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Despite our rural school district's small size and limited resources, we love robotics. Over 80% of our school children are of Hispanic descent, and many of them are English Language Learners. Our robotics team reflects this diversity as well. Our teams welcome students of all ability levels from special ed through our gifted program and everyone in between.

Participation in our after-school robotics program changes the trajectory of our students' lives by giving them a glimpse of the wide variety of career options and giving them experiential, hands-on activities/learning of 21st-century programming and job skills.

Our school sponsored 5 teams this year during our regular season. We are now in the off-season and have kids begging to come in on their own time to practice with the robots and get better at coding so they can hit the ground running next August. Since we began 7 years ago, we have been fortunate enough to send at least 2 of our teams to the state competition every year. FLL has switched from the older EV3 robot to the newer Spike Prime robots, so we are working on updating our robot fleet. We are doing this one robot project at a time.

Kids join robotics because they think robots sound fun, but they get so much more! Our novice students quickly become experts in computer coding, but, more importantly, they learn the cooperation, critical thinking, leadership, and presentation skills applicable to all their future learning. Kids love the hands-on nature of learning to code through experiences.

We can't give all the credit to the robots. The FIRST Robotics program is an amazing force for building positive life skills in our students, but we can't run the program without the robots.
