About My Students

Though I have years of experience in technology and design fields, this is the first year that I am teaching three technology and computer programming courses. My students Gene, Adrian, and Max have excelled since day one, always looking to advance their proficiency in technology and programming.

In class, we explore the fact that there is much more to the electronic devices that we commonly use than we can see from the outside. After exploring and building some elementary circuits from scratch, we came up with a project in which students will build a device of their choosing, and document their progress in each stage of the build. Upon successful completion of the build, students will present their builds to the school in a form of an academic conference. Upon researching some devices that can be built using some readily available components, these students decided that they wanted to build a cell phone from scratch. Other students will be exploring the elementary steps of programming using micro-controllers and advanced circuits.

These innovative students will be working in groups to immerse themselves in a project with which they don't have expertise. This project will take place over a sustained time, building skills such as maintaining ongoing research and development as well as culturing an ethic of perseverance. This is a hands-on, perspective shifting experience where students are given the opportunity to build (and hopefully improve) a working piece of current technology. This is among the more ambitious projects that I have undertaken in class, and we are willing to face the challenge that comes along with the great gains we will see with a successful build. I am inspired by these students to continue to improve the educational experience at public schools in our area - for this goal we came up with the TINKER project, an immersive experience in Technology, Innovation, Networking, Knowledge, Education, and Research.

In Their Own Words

We are trying to accomplish a school project. Our idea is to try and build a smartphone from scratch. It is actually really amazing because we would be making our own types of phones! My friend and I plan to try and make some for our class as well. It would really help if we got the materials we requested.

We will be a leader by making a smartphone without using a smartphone that was already made. We would call the phone the "GAPS" phone. We would be a leader because we would inspire other individuals to make great things in their life like this smartphone.

This is important to us because we would love to make our own piece of technology that can change the world. We love technology so making this smartphone would be an amazing project. It would help our community because some children do not have phones and they would love to have one and whenever they are in need of their parents or anyone else, they could just call them up, using the phone their friends made.
