This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 5th grade in a Spanish and English Dual Immersion school. This means that instruction is taught in English and Spanish. Our students are mostly from immigrant families. Most of our students are English language learners, and 95% of them receive free lunch. Our school is located in a neighborhood struggling with drug and gang violence.
My students are rambunctious and sometimes unruly, but they are also resilient, wonderful, and hopeful.
They are dedicated to their families and loyal to their friends. They help out at home with younger siblings. Some of them are already responsible for the care of a younger brother or sister. They love all the things that any 10 year old loves... recess, friends, games, and field trips. They dream and hope for a better future.
My Project
My students need time to practice their fluency. I notice that they are not reading at home. I want to purchase timers so they can practice in class. My students take turns timing each other read from their fluency reader. Fluency is an important component of comprehension.
The partnerships will provide a safe and encouraging environment for students to read.
The fluency readers are on their individual reading levels so each child can feel successful. And the timers will add a bit of excitement and fun! So, on your mark, get ready, read!
