My Students

We are a first-grade French immersion class on the West Side of Los Angeles. Our program is one of only two French Immersion programs in LAUSD. Our kids are diverse, funny and smart. They work as a family to make their classroom a special place, and you can help us!

This year's ELA focus is on reading fluency!

Specifically, we are working on not just reading with accuracy and prosody, but working on our fluency RATE. Kids who can read are prepared for today's world. Kids who can read with ALACRITY are that much better prepared for a competitive world of fast-changing information and often overwhelming sensory inputs.

Our kids this year come from diverse backgrounds. We have kids with families from all over the world! At our school, we don't just speak French. We also speak English, and lots of us speak Spanish, Farsi, Mandarin, Dutch, Afrikaans, and many other languages! We celebrate diversity in our class.

My Project

Reading is so important. The ability to read is generally broken into 5 components: Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.

One oft-neglected component of the ability to read is FLUENCY.

Fluency comprises 3 different skills: accuracy, prosody (reading with expression and feeling), and RATE. This year, our ELA focus is on fluency rate. My kids are doing great in all the other reading areas, but we need to work on reading A LITTLE BIT FASTER!

The egg timers will be used for partner teams who time each other on practice passages. Our goal is to raise the number of Words per Minute (wpm) we can read! The other items are a few things we also need: As we build out our flexible seating program, these bouncy balls occasionally pop or deflate. This project is intended to replace two balls that have gone flat. Finally, some of my kids need these earmuffs to block out the productive noise in my classroom.
