My Students

Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend.~Theophrastus We have a lot of graphing to do! We spend too much time drawing the graphs and not enough discussing them and what they mean to us in our lives. Graphing calculators will help us get to the most important part with time to spend on it!

My students are wonderful, as is my school.

Being that this is the School of the Arts, the students are very talented. They are not all academically gifted. They have shown possession of a talent in an artistic field, like theater, visual arts, chorus, band, etc. The performances they produce are amazing. The parents are involved within their art and are supportive of them doing well in class. The school is well kept and welcoming. This is my first year here. The biggest hindrance I have found is the availability of supplies. The people are amazing.

My Project

I have spent years working in Title One schools and this is my first year not in one. The only disadvantage I see is that the resources available to Title One schools are not available to us, as funding is scarce. Graphing calculators and other technologies abound at Title One schools. This is not so, here. So while I know how to teach with the calculators, I am hindered by the fact that my students don't have access. (See three different non-graphing calculators in the picture. This is what we use now.) There are other things I need but this is the one thing that will have the greatest impact on students understanding the curriculum and how it pertains to their lives. I have up to 33 students in a class, so having 17 calculators will allow for them to work in pairs. We need graphing calculators to assist students in learning about functions and their applications to life.

Using the graphing calculators allows the students to get to the graphs quickly and analyze them.

We can compare graphs and talk about the changes, the key features, the important points. We can use real data that involves large numbers and pertains to their lives. Without the calculators we use made-up values that are generic but keep the numbers manageable for paper and pencil work. They will better retain the content and be able to apply it to more they encounter.
