My Students

My 7th grade Social Studies classroom is a place of challenge, debate, and hard questions with no easy answers. Students engage with historical material, historical figures, other students, and their teachers to try to answer tough historical questions. We look to the past to understand our present and our future.

Our school population is incredibly diverse.

Economic, racial, and cultural differences end up becoming sources of strength as students interact and engage with each other in respectful and meaningful ways.

My Project

We will read the young adult novel "Chains" by Laurie Halse Anderson in order to explore history in a new and different way than we have previously. This is an impeccably researched novel about two topics that are central to the 7th grade Social Studies curriculum: slavery and the American Revolution. The novel also has the added bonus of being set in our own hometown, New York City, so students will gain a bit of local history along the way!

Well-written historical fiction is a compelling way to bring history to life for students.

This time period can be difficult for some students to connect with because there no photographs or videos to show them what it was like to live through it. Laurie Halse Anderson uses accurate, true details to make this historical era vivid and reachable.
