My Students

My students are all from the inner city. We are a Title I school that only serves girls. We are the first all-female school in our public school system. My girls are hardworking, dedicated and determined young ladies who always rise above all the naysayers. Our school provides a rigorous education that is needed in today's society. We are an academically focused school that will show everyone that we have beauty and brains. She believed she could, so she did!

My Project

The graphic novel Beowulf will help my struggling readers while still reading the same novel as their peers. These novels will make a difference in my students learning because they will help my struggling readers comprehend a difficult required reading of classic literature.

My students will be engaging in a text with contemporary situations and characters.

This text has characters, themes, and plots that my students can find meaning with and opportunities for empathy. My students are going to connect with this classic text in new ways. My classroom will seek to synthesize, redefine, and stretch the traditional literary canon for the contemporary student.
