Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
We are an amazing, 100% Title I elementary school full of over 600 smiling faces diligently working to reach our goals. These smiling faces are hoping that the 2021-2022 School Year will see them attending class in the building and once again coming to our Library!
My students work hard to grow in all areas, including the Four Cs of Library - Critical Thinking, Community, Collaborate & Create!
Half of our students are beautifully bilingual, with 46% designated as limited English proficient. We are a neighborhood where families look out for one another. Our students walk to or are dropped off at school, with buses providing transportation only for our students in self-contained classes. Our transiency and chronic absenteeism rates are in the double digits and are higher than the district average. The Digital Divide, food insecurities, and being in a book desert with low book access are real issues for many of our hard-working families. While we have obstacles to overcome, our dedicated staff, students, and families are working to show that success is building a community that cares for, supports, and works diligently for our wonderful and talented learners.
My Project
Developing a love of reading happens in many ways. One way is that kids LOVE nonfiction. Quite often, and most especially for reluctant readers, a nonfiction book can be scary due to length. However, a really cool TIME for Kids magazine with cover art that grabs their attention gets students reading!
Teaching how to read Nonfiction Text Structures and Building Home Libraries is critical for developing successful, lifelong readers- these TIME for Kids magazines to use for instruction, then take home to build Home Libraries will be most welcomed!
These will be used for the 2021-2022 School Year, which will be my fourth year with my School Family. My older students know that when they walk into our Library for instruction and there are TIME for Kids News magazines on tables, every one of them will be leaving with a magazine to build their Home Libraries. But, the soon to be First Graders have not had the opportunity to learn this during their Kinder year due to COVID. This project will welcome them to this tradition during their 1st grade year!
