CCJW school is located in Jersey City, NJ. It is a K-8 school, servicing nearly 900 students most of whom receive free lunch based on socioeconomic status. My students, or my co-teachers as I like to call them, are nothing short of resilient. They come from various backgrounds, representing the cultural flair of the city, while blending together as one family in the classroom. My students may face challenges in their personal lives, but facing hardships in the classroom is not something I want them to experience.
The only challenges I want them to take on while they are in the classroom are those that will strengthen their moral character and build mental stamina.
They enjoy reading novels that are culturally diverse and allow my Middle Schoolers to see themselves in the story. They are honing their technological skills as they ride the new wave of computer literacy. My co-teachers are ready and willing to move forward in their studies and you can help make this possible.
My Project
My students are ravenous for books that are able to provide them with self to text connections. They have recently developed a fondness for Walter Dean Myers, a local author who wrote about topics relatable to lives of my students. As a result, we have selected some titles we feel address current events and can help create that "Hey, me too!" experience.
We may not be able to take many trips, but these books would make for a wild adventure.
Once my students finished reading, "Monster", they wanted to dive right into the next novel. How could I tell them no?
